5 Ways To Get Cash For Junk Cars In Your Backyard

Posted on

It's easy to let a junk car linger in your backyard for months or even years. Maybe you're hoping to one day fix it up, or maybe you're just too lazy to deal with it. That junk car, however, is taking up valuable space, and it's time to get rid of it. You can even get cash for junk cars. Here's what you need to know.

1. Sell It For Parts

If your junk car is still in reasonably good shape, you may be able to sell it for parts. There are a number of places that pay cash for junk car parts, and you can usually get a decent price for them. Just be sure to get multiple quotes so you can be sure you're getting the best price.

If you are mechanically inclined and have the time, you could sell junk car parts yourself. Simply disassemble the car and list each part on an auction site or local garage sale page online.

2. Sell It 'As Is'

If your junk car is in really bad shape, you may not be able to sell it for parts; however, that doesn't mean it's totally worthless. There are still a number of people and businesses that will buy junk cars as-is. You probably won't get much money for it, but it's better than nothing. It may be just the 'project car' that a parent and child are looking for.

3. Scrap It

If your junk car is truly beyond repair, your best bet is to scrap it. You can take it to a scrapyard, sometimes referred to as a junkyard, and they pay cash for junk cars. While every junkyard is different, they typically pay based on the weight of the car and what they can get for the scrap metal.

4. Donate It

If you're feeling particularly generous, you can donate your junk car to charity. Many charities take cars whether they are running or not. They either have volunteers that can fix them or they will take them for scrap. Either way, you'll get the benefit of a tax deduction. Just be sure to get a receipt so you can claim it on your taxes.

5. Trade It In

If you're planning on buying a new car, you may be able to use your junk car as a trade-in. This won't necessarily get you the most money for your car, but it is the easiest way to get rid of a junk car. Many car dealerships run annual sales stating that you can "drag, push, or pull" your non-working car in for trade.

There you have it: five options to get that car off the blocks and out of your backyard today. (For more information, turn to a service such as PGH Junk Cars.)
